For example our ceilings are 8 tall and our wall sconces are mounted at just above 6. Placement height for a wall sconce varies between 60 and 72 inches up from the floor. If the room has vaulted ceilings or if you happen to have a tall family above 6 then you can adjust the height accordingly. However if the average height of people living in your home is well above 6 feet or below five and a half you may want to adjust accordingly.

Generally this would be a minimum of six feet from the floor. Overall the purpose of a wall sconce is to highlight or accent something such as a picture. So if you had a 9 high ceiling measure for your wall sconce installation to be around 6 5. Generally wall sconces are installed at a height of 66 inches to 72 inches 5 5 feet to 6 feet above floor level rooms with vaulted ceilings can take a higher placement.

So how high should wall sconces be mounted. Typically a wall sconce should be hung between 66 to 77 inches from the floor. Therefore the wall box for that sconce should be six feet less the distance from the top of the sconce to the center of the wall box. The sconce will cause some shadowing because the beam does not project that far or wide.

I really like the rule of thumb that your wall sconce should be mounted 3 4 of the height of your ceiling height.
